I Am Reading...

I shouldn't be in awe when I step in and out of a book store, yet I am. Heck, I even shelved those books for a good nine months of my life so I shouldn't be surprised that out of all of the books on all of those shelves, I can actually just choose one book. No more. No less.

I had finished The Glass Castle and needed a replacement for my 9:30 PM reading date each night. I have several reading niches, but I have a hard time narrowing down when push comes to shove in the bookstore. I can't buy them all. I have the same problem at the library. I have no business checking out more than one book because I am a slow reader and will not finish them all by the due date.

My process usually starts in the fiction at the beginning of the alphabet. This time I made it to the E's when I read the back of The Master Butchers Singing Club by Louise Erdrich. I had only read one other book by Erdrich, The Birchbark House, and I read that for a children's literature class in graduate school. However, I remember loving that book. As I read the cover and the first few pages, I realized this fit my reading needs.

I love historical fiction and this story actually takes place in North Dakota. This didn't surprise me since Erdrich grew up in North Dakota. I have read about 50 pages and still love it. This solves my problem when I am finished with this book. I will go and choose another novel by Erdrich.

Sara, you are going to LOVE this book. It's one of my all time favorites, ever, and everyone I've ever recommended it to loves it too! Louise Erdrich is an amazing writer. I've read almost everything she's written. This is probably my very favorite novel of hers. I also have enjoyed The Beet Queen a lot. A lot of her novel characters are loosely interconnected, which I love. Almost all of them are set in North Dakota/Minnesota. Hooray for you!
